In this one-hour presentation, Dr. Van de Venne discusses alcohol and

substance use / misuse trends in military vs civilian US populations through

the lens of socio-ecological theory. Drawing upon components of this public

health model, different levels of influence are highlighted that prevention

professionals can strive to impact. This discussion will highlight Department

of War policy changes which have shifted tobacco and substance use from

a culture of active encouragement and institutional subsidy to one of stricter

regulation, health-focused prevention, and zero tolerance; The

presentation ends by highlighting innovative treatment and harm reduction

strategies being employed to improve recovery and rehabilitation

outcomes.
