Lillian Marino Receives Carolyn Ford-Griffith Youth of the Year Award

May 8, 2018

This award is presented to a student from the tri-state region that has modeled a drug-free lifestyle, taken an active role in youth substance use prevention, and motivated his or her peers to take an active role in substance use prevention.

Lily is a senior at Saint Henry District High School in Erlanger, Kentucky.  She has worked with Prevention First for four years, helping with ten conferences.

Within her own school community, Lily is the President of Students Against Destructive Decisions, Mock Trial, and Culinary Club. She is also a member of the Students Ambassadors Association, Freshman Welcoming Committee, Pep Club, and the Theatre Department (participating in all eight fall plays and spring musicals). Next semester, Lily will attend the University of North Carolina’s Maynor Honors College. She is being fast-tracked into the pre-law program with a double major in Speech and Communications and in Criminal Justice.

Lily is a 4-year Varsity Track and Field Athlete and placed 3rd at state. She will continue as a thrower at UNC. Her previous sports include soccer, swimming, dance, volleyball, basketball, and Mixed Martial Arts.

In addition to her love of sports, her greatest passion is advocating for others. Through Prevention First, Lily gained strong leadership skills, allowing her to not only lead school clubs but also delegate responsibly so all members can feel their voice is heard. While helping to run conferences like Youth Leadership Institute, Youth Summit, and Coaches, Kids, and Chemicals, Lily has reached as many as 200 teenagers and not only shared her story, but shared the message of Prevention First. With the skills of time management, attention to detail, organization, and effective communication refined through Prevention First, she plans to start an information dissemination group and grow the community outreach program at UNCP for her Honors College Senior Project.
